What’s up, Pimps and Pinups! It’s your girl, Maya the B! Some of you might be familiar with me, some of you might be like ‘who is this chick?’ Rock with me and I promise I will earn your love with my charm and wit :) Ha. You can see me on ThisIs50 Radio which airs on Wednesdays on thisis50.com between 7-9PM EST.

What qualifies me?
I’m an 80′s baby, therefore I was lucky enough to come of age during some of the best movements in Hip Hop. Not only am I well versed in our culture, I love it!!! Music is part of me and I couldn’t imagine my life without its influence. I remember watching the boys in the school yard, ciphering and making jokes- and I knew I had to sharpen my skills if I wanted to be respected for my knowledge and being. Not that I rapped, but I had the swag of a rapper LOL thanks to Jay-Z who heavily influenced my attitude and demeanor. I felt like a new breed of woman. I played sports, had all the hottest music first, rocked all the flyest kicks, my snaps were on point and still managed to be pretty and feminine. I wanted to be equal when I hung out with the guys, a force to be reckoned with. I used my humor and personality to gain popularity and loved being the funny chick- that everybody wants to be around. I think I achieved my goal.

I started making my own mixtapes in college for all the fancy girls like me who didn’t necessarily want to go into barbershops in the hood looking for the new shit. I grew up in the Internet age. I quickly realized that the world was at my fingertips and that I should get very familiar and experienced with using the computer and all its resources. I found all the new joints that I wanted, as well as the classics that I needed. Then, I started interning for WJMN 94.5 Boston, got more experience and education in the music industry. At the time, I had been working in the promotions department and unaware of my soon found love for being on air. But, it was only right. I was always the type of person that was the life of the party without trying. I didn’t do stand-up comedy or any drama kid shit like that, but I was just cool and made people laugh. I enjoyed it. It made me feel good to know that I could entertain and make people happy with words. So, when I got to New York City in 2004- I started VJ-ing for a DVD series all about Hip Hop stars and their financials. Quickly, I became known for being a thorough journalist, asking questions that the people want to know and digging deep to provide the best possible interview. It was my mission to give the viewers something they’ve never seen before. I wanted to expose a new truth or fallacy that would enlighten and educate people.

During my VJ-ing run, I was asked to participate on a radio show that focused on women doing big things in media. It was my first interview and time being on the air. Immediately, I fell in love with it and took over the whole show like it was 2nd nature! That’s when my romp with radio began.

They call me Maya the Brasilianaire because I look like exotic money and of course other obvious reasons. Over the years, I shortened it down to Maya the B which was actually an old cartoon that I used to get taunted with when I was kid. “Mayyyyyyya, Maya the Bee.” Who knew, as an adult, I would embrace it and use it professionally?

I also wrote for credible print and online publications like Allhiphop.com, Hip Hop Weekly, Ballerstatus.com, Rap Fanatic and Monsta magazine. I have a BA in Communications and my 9-5 focus is on my online marketing business, Calamity Jane Holdings which I’m proud to say I have now established an awesome roster of clients like Freeway, EPMD, Balance, Charlie Clips, DNA and others. I started CJH just by knowing the ins and outs of the internet and how search engines work- and most importantly how you can get them to work for you, naturally!

That’s Maya the B and if you have any other questions for me- feel free to give me a shout! Follow me on twitter @MayatheB and I’ll follow you back
